Fast-paced and luck-based, roulette is the perfect game for beginners and seasoned gamblers alike. In our guide, we’ll cover the best sites to play online roulette, game variations, winning strategy & more.

Where to Play Roulette Online

Every casino’s offering isn’t the same – these are our favorite casinos for playing online roulette:

Introduction to Roulette

A casino classic, roulette has been played for over two centuries and has yet to lose its popularity. The iconic image of the white ball dancing around the rim of a spinning wheel has come to represent the glitz and glamour of casino gambling. The game is played on a table, with a wheel at one end and a betting board for players to sit around. Roulette is exciting because it is a game of chance – where the ball lands is down to luck and there is nothing that players can do to influence it. Online roulette is just as fun and incredibly easy to understand.

Place your Bets

In roulette, the aim is to predict where the ball will land. At the start of the game, you will be able to bet on the colour of the landing place, its number and whether the value will be odd or even. To bet, simply place your wager onto the table in the corresponding box.

Spin the Wheel

A European roulette wheel has 37 numbered slots: 18 red, 18 black and 1 green. Once bets are placed, the game will start. The croupier (the dealer) will spin the roulette wheel. The ball will move around the edge of the wheel and as it slows, it will settle into one of the 37 slots.

As soon as the ball has settled, the lost bets will be cleared from the board. The winning bets will be paid out immediately, and the game will reset to start all over again!

Different Bet Types in Online Roulette

In roulette, bets are predictions of where the ball will land on the wheel once it stops spinning. Players place their chips on the roulette table in spots that correspond to the different options on the wheel. There are two types of bets in online roulette: inside bets and outside bets.

Outside Bets in Online Roulette

Outside bets are simpler, but offer a lower payout because the chances of winning are greater. This is an ideal betting system if you are playing a more conservative strategy or have a smaller bankroll.

Here are the outside bet types in online roulette:

  • Even – win if the ball lands on any even number
  • Odd – win if the ball lands on any odd number
  • Red – win if the ball lands on any red number
  • Black – win if the ball lands on any black number
  • 118 – win if the ball lands on any number between 1 and 18 (1 and 18 included)
  • 19-36 – win if the ball lands on any number between 19 and 36 (19 and 36 included)
  • 1st 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 1 and 12
  • 2nd 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 13 and 24
  • 3rd 12 – win if the ball lands on any number between 25 and 36
  • Column –There are 3 columns on the board you can wager on. Column bets pays 2:1.

Inside Bets in Online Roulette

Inside bets are a little more complex, but offer a higher payout because the chances of winning are lower. This is an ideal betting system if you are playing an aggressive betting strategy or have a bigger bankroll.

  • Street – A bet on any 3 (horizontal) numbers on the board. For example, a bet on 1-3 or 4-6.
  • Six Line – Also known as a double street bet. This is a wager on two lines of three (horizontal) numbers. For example, a bet on 1-6 would be a six-line bet.
  • Corner – This is a bet made on the intersection of 4 adjacent numbers on the board. For example, you can bet on the corners of 16, 17, 19, 20, and you win if the ball lands on any of the numbers you wagered on.
  • Split – This is like a corner bet, except made on the intersection of two numbers instead of four. For example, a bet made between 17 and 20 would be a split bet.
  • Straight Up – Bet on any specific number from 0/00 to 36.

Roulette Odds and Payouts

Roulette is a game of chance, and the very best players have a strong understanding of the odds. The odds vary depending on what game variation you like to play. In the table below, we compare the European and American roulette odds, alongside the usual casino payout for each win. Be sure to check the payouts at your chosen casino to ensure you are playing with the best ones available.

Types of Roulette

The three most common types of roulette are European, American and French. Many online casinos offer all three, as well as some exciting, modern variations. Here are the most popular styles and their differences:

European Roulette

European Roulette

European roulette is the most popular roulette gameThe wheel contains the numbers 1-36 in red and black, as well as the single green zero (0) slot.  When the ball lands in the zero slot, all outside bets are lost completely. This single zero slot gives the house an edge of 2.7%.

American Roulette

American Roulette

The major difference between European roulette and American roulette is the presence of an extra zero slot. While it still has the numbers 1-36 and the zero slot, American roulette also features a double zero (00) slot. Like on a European table, if the ball lands in either of the zero slots, all outside bets are lost. This bumps the house edge up to 5.26%. It is worth noting that this higher risk doesn’t mean that players will be paid more for a winning bet – in fact, American, European and French roulette payouts are usually the same.

French Roulette

French Roulette

Roulette was first devised in France during the 18th century, so it is fitting that many players around the world still choose to play the French version today. It is played on a wheel identical to the European game and only has one zero slot. The layout of the French betting table is slightly different, but the methods and types of wagers are the same. The key difference is in the rules – if the ball lands on the zero slot, you have a second chance.

Each game of French roulette operates with one of two rules.

The first of these is ‘la partage.’ If the ball lands on zero and you have made an outside bet, you’ll receive half of your wager back. This rule makes the odds better for the player, cutting the house edge down to 1.35%.

Alternatively, the game might operate with the ‘en prison’ rule. If the ball lands on zero, your losing wager is frozen on the board until the next spin. If it is a winner on that spin, the bet is returned. If not, it is lost. Again, this second chance cuts the house edge down to 1.35%.

With the lowest house edge of the traditional styles, many seasoned players prefer French roulette.

Multi-Ball Roulette

Multi-Ball Roulette

Usually played on a European table, multi-ball roulette is when between two and ten balls are released each game. It’s possible to win on one, none or all of the balls! However, depending on the casino, either the bets or the payouts are adjusted accordingly. Make sure you know which beforehand! This adjustment keeps the house edge at 2.7%.

Multi-Wheel Roulette

Multi-Wheel Roulette

As the name suggests, rather than betting on one wheel, in multi-wheel roulette you may be betting on as many as eight.  This style is usually played on a European wheel, and while you have more opportunities to score a win, your bankroll can be swept up quickly in this game. If playing multi-wheel roulette, it’s good practice to reduce your base wager on each wheel to compensate for playing multiple systems at once.

Live Dealer Roulette

Live Dealer Roulette

All of the above types of roulette can be played with a live dealer online. You’ll be able to see and communicate with the dealer, place your bets and watch the wheel spin in real time! Many players love live dealer games because of their immersive quality – bringing the thrill of an in-person casino into your home.

No Zero Roulette

No Zero Roulette

A rare style, no zero roulette is exactly as it sounds – there are no zero slots on the wheel. You won’t find this style at an in-person casino, because it strips the operator of their house advantage. Many are therefore reluctant to provide the game. However, there are a few online casinos which offer no zero roulette, but not without a counterweight – no zero games for real money often have a binding commission and the maximum bet is often significantly lower than a traditional game.

Online Roulette Strategy

In roulette, there isn’t a basic roulette strategy that changes the odds in your favour.  While you may find some sites that recommend “winning strategies” for roulette, no such system mathematically exists. Similarly, you might see betting “strategies” online such as the Fibonacci or Martingale, which guide players on how much to bet each spin. It’s important to understand that adopting these “strategies” has absolutely no affect on the outcome of the spin. If someone tells you they have a sure shot way to win on the roulette board, don’t buy what they’re selling.

One of the things that makes roulette so exciting is that it is purely a game of chance. If the ball lands where you have bet big, it is simply luck. That being said, there are a few things that we advise to help you play smarter.

Manage your Bankroll

The key to successful gambling is to manage your bankroll properly. This involves knowing exactly how much you have at any given time and wagering responsibly – no single bet should represent more than 20% of your bankroll. Never chasing loses or spend more than you have. Roulette is supposed to be fun and all successful gamblers know when to walk away.

Know the Odds

In a game of chance, odds are your friend. By understanding the odds of each bet you place, you can adjust the size of your bet accordingly. If you choose to play outside bets where the odds are higher, you might feel comfortable wagering more money per round.  On inside bets where the odds of winning are lower, you might choose a smaller initial bet.
