A Bitcoin wallet is an application that stores two very important pieces of information: your deposit address and your private key. Your deposit address is like your home address—it’s okay that people know what it is, and if you want people to send you things, you’ll need to give them that address. Your private key is like your house key—it proves that you own the things in your home, and you don’t want to give it out to anyone. This is crucial to remember: your deposit address can be shared, but your private key should be kept safe and secure, and never shared.

Selecting a Bitcoin Wallet

There are many wallets to choose from, but we recommend using Exodus. Go to the top-right on the homepage and click on Download. Select the app for your operating system (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, or Linux) and download it. Once downloaded, install and launch the app.

Setting Up Your Bitcoin Wallet

Next, you’ll want to copy your wallet’s deposit address, sometimes called a public address—this is where you will send your Bitcoin once you’ve purchased it.

In your Exodus app, click on Wallet, select Bitcoin, and then click on Receive. You’ll be presented with a long string of text and a QR code. That string of text is your deposit address.

Once you’ve transferred Bitcoin to your wallet, you will be prompted to create a password and copy down your seed phrase. The seed phrase is a series of 12 words that, if entered in the correct order, will grant access to your wallet should you lose your password. Store the seed phrase in a very safe place—anyone with access to it will have access to your Bitcoin.

Funding Your Bitcoin Wallet

Now that you have your wallet set up, you’ll need to buy some Bitcoin.
